Computer Eye Strain Relief

BRIGHTNESS

Looking at light that is too bright can strain your eyes.  Adjust the brightness of your computer screen to try and match the brightness of your surroundings.   As a test, look at the white background of a web page. If it looks like a light source, it’s too bright. If it seems dull, it might be too dark.

BLINK

Blinking helps moisten your eye by stimulating the release of tears and spreading them along your eye’s surface.  Research shows that people doing computer work blink less frequently and completely.  This results in eyes feeling dry and irritated.  Reduce your risk of dryness by stopping to do a short blink exercise every 20 minutes. Close your eyes naturally, hold for two seconds then open. Next close your eyes and squeeze, hold for two seconds then open.

BREAK

Staring at a computer screen for hours overloads our focusing system.  This can lead to symptoms of eyestrain like headaches and blurry vision.  Relieve your focusing system by taking a 20 second break to look 20 feet away every 20 minutes.  Optometrist call this the 20-20-20 Rule.  Looking in the distance helps relax your focusing system and reduce the risk of eye fatigue.
