If you  suffer from dry eyes, you are probably too familiar with the problems it can cause. These problems can range from discomfort and itchiness to blurry or fluctuating vision. What is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)?

Meibomian glands are oil glands that line the edge of your eyelids. These glands secrete the oil that coats the eyes, to prevent the tears from evaporating too quickly. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common condition that occurs when the oil glands become blocked. The blockage prevents a normal flow of oil. The oil that does get through the glands can be gritty, poor in quality, and may cause irritation.

MGD often does not present symptoms in the earliest stages. As the condition progresses, it can cause dry eye symptoms and/or inflammation of the eyelid if left untreated. When MGD is left untreated, and the glands are constantly blocked, oil secretion becomes impossible. This can cause permanent damage and extreme discomfort. The risk of developing MGD increases with age, with most patients being among those age 40 and older. However, with increase of digital device use, Dr. Copeland is seeing younger and younger patients suffering from MGD.

How is MGD Diagnosed?

Dr. Copeland determines if you are suffering from MGD through meibography, a unique form of imaging that allows your eye doctor to see, and take photos, below the surface of the eyelids. This provides not only a diagnosis but also a look at any structural damage that may have already occurred.

If you have MGD, some of the symptoms that you may experience include:
  • Stinging, burning, or itchy eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Eye redness
  • Difficulty driving at night
  • Discomfort while wearing contact lenses
  • Watery eyes
  • Blurred vision

Whether you have been diagnosed with MGD, or are experiencing the symptoms listed above, TearCare® may be the right dry eye treatment system for you. You can also learn more about MGD by clicking here.

How Does the TearCare® System Work?

The TearCare® System provides targeted and adjustable thermal energy to the Meibomian glands. This energy is delivered by two software-controlled flexible devices placed on the upper and lower eyelids by our staff. The soft, flexible material conforms to your eye’s shape and does not cause discomfort. In fact, one of the major benefits is that your eyes stay open and you can blink throughout your dry eye treatment. The devices use thermal energy to loosen up blocked glands. Dr. Copeland then expresses the warmed glands to push out clogged oils. Removing the obstruction allows your Meibomian glands to better function and prevents permanent damage. TearCare® dry eye treatment is quick, painless, and non-invasive.

TearCare is a 4-in-1 system that includes:
  • Smart hub controlled by computer software to deliver the thermal heat to the eyelids
  • Charging station
  • One-time use flexible eyelid devices
  • One-time use instrument to manually remove blockages from the glands

The Benefits of the TearCare® System

The typical MGD treatment methods tend to use devices that sit over both eyes during dry eye treatment. The TearCare® System, works with your eyes open and allows you to blink during treatment. This means a much more comfortable procedure for the vast majority of patients. Not only is the TearCare® System a more comfortable experience for many patients, the results are much quicker. TearCare® is proven to effectively prevent damage to your glands and provides long-lasting relief.
